please forgive the overall amateur nature of this photo--i was excited, it was late, and i couldn't wait to try it on and post a picture on facebook. :)
it has come to my attention that there are a scarcity of tutorials online for dresses for grown women that actually look appropriate for grown woman. but first a story about why i had to make a dress at the last minute.
this past sunday was ella's first dance recital. on friday--about 48 hours before she was due at the theater for the dress rehearsal--she told me she would like it if i wore a pretty dress to the show. the problem was that i didn't have anything appropriate--all i have are day dresses, for ordinary day-to-day activities, and one cocktail dress appropriate for low-level cocktailing (which has happened exactly once in the past four years).
anyhoo, i went thru the stash and found four yards of pretty cotton fabric that would work for a late afternoon event and i posted a request for suggestions on that mecca of advice, facebook.
i got lots of great suggestions for dresses that are right up my alley style-wise but which for one reason or another wouldn't work for this fabric--i even worked out a pattern for a dress that i will be making as soon as i unearth five yards of something non-self-clingy.
finally i just decided that i didn’t have time to “plan”--this was a situation that called for rectangles, and that is what my entire outfit is made of—rectangles of fabric and some elastic. i learned to make these garments ages ago when i first started making clothing for myself--long before i used commercial patterns--i'm talking before the beginner dress.
instead of posting all the instructions here, i created two new pages, one for the blouse, and one for the skirt. this is part of my upcoming site redesign in which i hope/plan to make things a little more easy to find. warning: making an outfit at the last minute means not stopping to take pictures of the process. please bear with me—i’ll be making at least one more of each of these pieces this summer and as long as it doesn’t happen at the last minute, i’ll take pictures and add them to the tutorial pages when i do.
EDITED TO ADD: in my haste i forgot my SRC points! 4 yards of fabric that i've had for about 6 months--let's say 4 points. a complete outfit, without a pattern, in 4 hours--40 points. lack of duck face in photo of outfit--must take 6 points for this so i can finish with a round number. 50 points total.
*the site redesign that i’m working on will consolidate categories in the archive and will also involve moving some things. please leave me a comment or two about how i can make this blog more useful and functional for you! i’m open to any and all suggestions.
